I’ve been released from jail, now what?

Upon your release from jail you will receive a yellow copy of your official bond.  Do not lose or throw away this document.  On the copy of your bond, you will find the date, time and location of your first court date.  This date is usually two weeks from your date of release.  For Travis County charges, you will go to the Blackwell Thurman Criminal Justice Center, located at 509 W. 11th Street in Austin, TX 78701.  Once inside you go to Court Administration in Room 2.700, located on the second floor.  The elevators to Court Administration are located down the hall to the right of the metal detectors and past Pretrial Services.

On your first court date, you will not be required to have an attorney present.  However, you will be required by Travis County to obtain an attorney by your next court date in order to proceed with your court case.  All defendants must obtain representation for their court case per Travis County.  If you have retained an attorney prior to you first court, the attorney may appear on your behalf.  You may either hire an attorney or apply for a court appointed attorney to represent you.  Court appointed attorneys are not guaranteed for all defendants and approval is subject to Travis County.

What if I’m on probation and am arrested on a new charge?

Often times when a defendant is on probation and receives a new charge, a warrant for a probation violation may be issued.  This does not mean that the defendant’s probation has been revoked, only that the defendant must reappear in court.  This warrant can be issued while the defendant is attempting to bond out of jail or after a defendant has already been bonded and released from jail.  This new charge will require a separate bail bond.
